Here is my opinion on selling having watched my portfolio get shredded in this past week.Although I still have every share,I started the week with. I am now convinced investing in great companies needs to be coupled with knowing when to take some money off the table.I had a meeting with a Prudential rep. last week he liked almost every thing in my portfolio,However he recommended I go 70% cash or hedge my positions with options(don't know enough about them to start using them as a investment strategy).Last friday,I was thinking about selling some portion of every holding(i have 25 stocks now)but decided against it.I knew it would be a choppy week and all the signs and signals were there but due to the recent unbelievable runs on the nasdaq one tends to dismiss people who are bearish short term. However we use these same people to get estimates, future forecast and their ratings to do our DD on a stock.
Looking back now, common sense is an invaluable tool when one invest(lindy's gut feeling)in high techs.Next time around I will not be standing in front of a correction train.I don't pay taxes because, I live overseas and we don't have taxes out here.So the real selling decision comes when a stock you hold triples in a matter of a month. One needs to really be honest with himself and ask if it is justified or not.
