I've heard it said that a company can be the smartest in the world, but it can't be smarter than all the other companies in the world.

And, that is a huge distinction. With all the excellent optical engineering programs out there, and all the very bright people, you don't really think that one company can gain a monopoly on all the talent?

That is like saying that Oracle can gain a monopoly on all the talented database developers. They may employ all the best for awhile, but eventually a Tom Siebel will decide he's had enough and wants to run his own show. The protection for a Gorilla is its proprietary technology.
