Purchased a couple of online music stocks end of last year predicting a great online music boom this year. Figured mp3 machines were becoming more common as were broadband internet connections. So far my prediction is not holding. Although there is no lack of interest, what has resulted is an overcrowded market place with each company pushing their technology. While the little guys are toughing it out the big labels look like they're finally moving. Ease of entry into the market place and lack of clear leader means it looks like they will go it alone, much to the detriment of my portfolio. I think what is needed in the immediate future is some industry consolidation. I feel the consumer is confused by choice, whilst no one player has yet gotten it completely right.

Does anyone feel consolidation will happen? Cash is evaporating and stock prices are plummeting. Unless stock prices can regain, the only currency these co's have for acquisition is becoming worthless. It looks like the online music co's will be the first internet co's to test bankruptcy. And the sad thing is that music is one of the most promising of the killer applications of the internet. I feel unless something big happens soon the music industry will soon be operating under the same regime it was before the internet (Napster aside of course).

Thoughts?
