Thank you for that post, that answered some questions I had concerning security and storage for e-books.
I think the concept of linking a file stored for download directly to a specific e-book solves the problem I considered in this regard.
Now, if I just knew the e-book had a VERY secure power-on function so the owner of the device could lock it down, making it inaccessible without the proper unlocking procedure, I would consider the issue of security to be very well addressed.
Also, with respect to Microsoft (the stealer of all great technologies), their ClearType technology actually has roots in a process referred to as Sub-Pixel Rendering, a technology that was first commercially developed by Apple over 20 years, then subsequently by Xerox, IBM, and other companies.
When banging the keys back in 1981, I first met a gentleman that truly understands technology like many of us (interpreted to mean me) could only wish. Steve Gibson provided me with much guidance in assembly language programming, a language he is still very much commited to.
You can find an excellent discussion on Sub-Pixel rendering on his website, and the topic is relevant because all new LCD displays (especially e-books) are/will be using the technology to enhance screen clarity. Some very unusual issues come up, including displaying text in landscape vs. portrait mode. Here's the link for anyone interested in a very good discussion of this technology:
