HDFC Bank to offer payments of taxes on-line

HDFC Bank Limited has plans to offer its customers the facilities to make payments for utilities on-line.

The banks retail banking chief in Pune, Anand Kane, said on Thursday that the banks customers will soon be able to make payments of their property taxes, electricity bills or telephone bills using the Banks telebanking and debit cards facilities launched on March 15.

The customers can instruct the bank telephonically to make the payments, use the ATM card or log onto the Internet to effect payment directly through their accounts, Kane said.

Property tax payments on-line will be accepted on an experimental basis from the Banks customers from the Aundh branch who are covered by the Aundh tax collection office of the Pune Municipal Corporation. The same facility can be offered to other account holders once the tax collection centres are linked electronically, Kane said.

He added that the bank is in discussion with the Maharashtra State Electricity Boards Pune officials for offering on-line payment of bills, while both the mobile phone companies in Pune have welcomed the proposal.

Speaking about the debit cards launch, Kane pointed out that the banks surveys indicated that a majority of credit card holders would actually prefer money being debited when they make any purchase using the card.

He said the banks customers

will be given a card the moment they open an account and this card will work both as their ATM card and debit card. There wont be any transaction fees for utility payments made using debit cards, he clarified. He also said the card will be accepted by the ATM centres of other banks all over the country.

Kane however made it clear that the bank will introduce its credit card very soon as there is a demand for that product too.
