Paradigm4 Employs Certicom Encryption Technology To Secure Wireless Data Service for Law Enforcement Officers - Trusted Elliptic Curve Cryptography Integrated Into SmartPartner Pager -

FAIRFIELD, N.J., March 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Paradigm4, a leading provider of wireless data services and solutions, announced that it is safeguarding criminal database queries that are conducted on its recently launched SmartPartner Pager utilizing technology from BellSouth Wireless Data, an expert in providing proven wireless data communications solutions, and Certicom, a provider of mobile e-business security. Paradigm4's SmartPartner Pager is a wireless data service that provides law enforcement officers with the ability to access information from local, state and federal criminal databases via the RIM 950 Wireless Handheld device.

The SmartPartner Pager wireless data service operates in a manner similar to mobile computers found in police cars and enables law enforcement officers to conduct a range of activities, from validating driver's license and vehicle registration integrity, to conducting stolen vehicle and wanted persons look- ups. Because of its small size and weight, SmartPartner Pager allows officers walking the beat, on bike patrol, equestrian patrol, conducting undercover investigations or in other situations to directly retrieve information in an environment where they typically lack that capability.

The SmartPartner Pager wireless data service operates on the RIM 950 Wireless Handheld, which is an easy-to-use device that fits inside the palm of an officer's hand. Paradigm4 developed the SmartPartner Pager application with the assistance of the BellSouth Powertool(TM) software. Data transmitted and received by the SmartPartner Pager over the BellSouth Intelligent Wireless Network(SM) is encrypted with Certicom's elliptic curve cryptography (ECC) technology.

``For law enforcement officers, the ability to securely access confidential records is of paramount importance,' said John Bay, co-chairman and vice- president of marketing of Paradigm4. ``Paradigm4's SmartPartner Pager gives officers the ability to retrieve the critical information they need when they need it -- quickly and securely.'

``With the BellSouth Powertool software and the integration of Certicom's elliptic curve cryptography, Paradigm4 has created a way for law enforcement officers to quickly and discreetly access the critical information they need every day,' said Lew Blumstein, Vice President, Enterprise and New Services Marketing. ``Using the core technology of the nationwide BellSouth Intelligent Wireless Network, which provides extensive and seamless roaming, low latency, and other key features, SmartPartner Pager is truly a powerful information tool for law enforcement agencies across the country.'

``The need for secure wireless data transmissions is a key issue in today's law enforcement system,' said Rick Dalmazzi, president and CEO of Certicom. ``Certicom and BellSouth Wireless Data have combined their technologies into an integrated solution which provides a trusted and private communication network for law enforcement agencies. Within this network, officers' communications are protected as they send and receive information via Paradigm4's SmartPartner Pager wireless data service.'

About Certicom's Elliptic Curve Cryptography

Developed for a broad range of computing platforms and maximum interoperability, Certicom's Elliptic Curve Cryptography (ECC) technology enables strong, high performance security for every piece of the computing infrastructure, including the new generation of small form-factor products such as handheld computers, pagers, cell phones and smart cards. These products are the new Internet appliances for electronic commerce, demanding strong, highly efficient security. Certicom's ECC implementation is optimized to provide more efficient, high-strength security at smaller key sizes in many mobile and wireless environments than traditional cryptographic systems. ECC minimizes power and bandwidth requirements in many mobile and wireless environments and addresses today's demand for compact, full strength security for many electronic communications and commerce applications.
