The zero per cent ball game

March 18 to 24, 2000

(Most manufacturers today offer interest-free loans. But are they for real? We check them out, writes Aarti Gupta)

A zero per cent finance option is what a smart Alec must have had in mind when he said, " To get a loan you have to prove that you don?t need it ." For, while the interest free part is very well, what is often overlooked is that one rarely gets the entire product price as a loan. One invariably has to shell out as much as half of the amount upfront in the form of advance EMIs (equated monthly installments) . As for the balance, it has to be repaid in as little as six months time. For a processing fee of two per cent if you please.

So zero per cent be dammed? Certainly not. ......
