1GHz race winner reveals more price cuts on lower speed Athlons ..... with "lower speed" equaling 800MHZ. I guess if they all run at 800 or better, you might as well sell 'em as 800's or better. Sure beats downbinning everything.

1GHz race winner reveals more price cuts on lower speed Athlons

Intel rival AMD is about to issue another round of price cuts, industry sources revealed on Friday.

The company's 800MHz Athlon chip will soon cost up to 50 percent less than an equivalent Pentium III chip processor. Reductions on other Athlon processors are also expected, according to the sources.

Sarah Scott, AMD's channel marketing manager, confirmed that the next round of price cuts will take place soon, but no details were available at the time of writing. The OEM price of the 800MHz Pentium III is currently set at $647 (œ410) in 1,000-unit quantities.

Parallel cuts in the cost of the 700MHz Athlon chip will enable systems manufacturers to offer new PCs based on the processor for as little as œ700. One UK direct vendor has already confirmed it will be selling a 700MHz Athlon system for œ699, excluding VAT, in May.

The system will include 64MB of RAM, a 15GB hard disk, 8X DVD-ROM drive and a 17in. monitor, as well as a 32MB TNT2 3D graphics card and 56kB/sec modem.

An Intel spokesman told ZDNet that the chip giant plans no immediate price cuts.
