Steve and Nancy; Isn't it a truthful statement to say that God, being omnificent, knew that his creation was going to sin before he made them but he made them anyway, along with a beautiful plan of salvation through his son's death on the cross to allow man a way to come to him through the shed blood of the perfect sinless Jesus?
If you agree with this statement then you must also realize that it was very loving of God to predestinate the salvation of his people, or those that the Bible calls His Elect or "Chosen Ones." Your reasoning that sinful man has a free will to choose Christ is proven other wise throughout the Bible. I agree with your statement that man does have free will, but not the "liberty" to choose Christ unless he is born again by the Holy Spirit that draws him to Christ. You are saying that God is obligated in some way to save fallen, sinful man. If grace is obligated by God then it is no longer grace. Do you know the meaning of grace? Isn't it plain throughout the Bible that God has the right to have mercy upon whom ever he chooses? The very essence of grace is that it is undeserved. God owes us justice but never mercy.
I do not have an answer as to why God only saves some. I don't doubt for a minute that God has the power to save all but the fact remains that he does not. Many live and die without ever knowing about Jesus Christ. Many die and go to hell because they were never filled with the spirit of God drawing them to salvation.
We are all guilty and deserve judgement and hell because of man's continual rebellion against God. I am greatful that he chose me but neither you or I can explain why he chooses some and not all.
My previous post was not meant to anger you. Only to draw you out and maybe cause you to question your views about this.
May our Sovereign Lord give us more understanding each day that we serve Him.

Santiago
