Most women have at least a few very close female friends. Where are they?

Keeping a low profile? Many of the witnesses want to remain anonymous..most likely to avoid the spotlight. I do not find it unusual that her friends would also want to stay out of the limelight.

As for her parents: as you very well know, at that age there's a LOT you don't tell your folks

I think this depends on the individual. I told my parents almost nothing. They did not know what classes I was taking..certainly not what transpired in a classroom. I had a similar living situation to Suzanne's. I was an American living abroad and then attended college in the US.

From what I have read Suzanne kept her parents up to date..at least wrt school. Her parents seem to be well informed. They knew she was writing a thesis. They knew she was having a tough time with her advisor. They knew when she submitted the thesis to her advisor. This seems like a lot of detail to me.

They also knew about the search the Internet for bomb making plans class. They disapproved (as would I especially if I were paying for it. I also object to basket weaving or surfing classes in lieu of English and Math in the California high schools)

I have not read anything ( well, I think they knew about her boyfriend) that would lead me to believe that Suzanne talked about her social life with her parents. However if she talks about classes I see no reason to believe that she would not discuss her social life too. I seriously doubt her parents would indicate such so the lack of this detail is not surprising to me.

I do believe Suzanne's parents engaged Jim through Suzanne. They probably had initial concerns arising from the Internet search class. Then their concerns were reinforced with the thesis issues. They were probably involved in the decision making prior to Suzanne's meeting with someone from Yale to discuss the Jim/advisor situation.

I believe this is why the Jovins speculated that their daughter's willingness to confront? (something like that) may have contributed to Suzanne's death.

I believe that after the discussions with her parents, friends and the Yale personnel Suzanne would have confronted Jim before making a written complaint.

I doubt that most students discuss their thesis advisors with Yale personnel. Classifying her concerns as average everyday run of the mill thesis advisor issues does not seem to fit the facts. Suzanne does not strike me as someone with poor judgement.

Why did she live alone off campus? That does seem to me odd, as I've said before.

I believe it is an indication of her level of maturity and self confidence.
I would assume she still had a friend or two with whom she confided..they just are not talking in public. We do not know much about her relationship with her boy friend either. I would think if she had a serious relationship with him then she was not really living alone per se.
