Dear James,
My desire is to find a point of balance in this. Elect of God was at a far side on this and you could see the error of going to far with any doctrine. How do you answer the verse I gave you especially when Jesus says "otherwise they might turn and be saved" how could they do this? On the other hand there are many verses that say the opposite. Therefore, God has left the door open to have compassion on whom He will have compassion and mercy on whom He will have mercy. In a study I did on Romans this year we discussed predestination a lot and this part of Romans 8 jumped out at me;
29 For whom He did foreknow, He also predestinate to be conformed to the image of His Son, that He might be the firstborn of many brethren.
The foreknow comes before the predestinate to me saying that He foreknows who will accept the truth and who will not. His choice is based on truth and the physical process of acceptance and belief is still necessary. Since God foreknows and predestinates it then it will indeed happen but it has to happen.
How can Israel be held accountable for disbelief if God predestined them to stumble beyond recovery. Why are accusations hurled at non believers if they can do nothing to make it change. It is God that is responsible for their disbelief if we go to far with this theology.
It is an interesting topic but the answers are vague and I chose to trust in the greatness and love of God and His desire that none should perish but that all have everlasting life through His Son.
May the Lord Bless you,
Nancy
