(Wish they would stop using Cheung Wah)

HONG KONG -- Chinadotcom Corp. and a unit of Japanese conglomerate Softbank Corp. announced plans Friday to create a joint venture that the companies valued at $100 million.

Chinadotcom said the venture will provide business and technology consulting services to Internet companies considering expansion in Asia.

The venture will be owned 50-50 by chinadotcom and Softbank's Cheung Wah Development Co. unit, which the company is renaming Softbank Investment Strategic.

Peter Yip, Chief Executive Officer of chinadotcom, said in a statement: "There is great synergy between the two companies, as both ... are dedicated to making investments through incubating and accelerating the development of new and existing Internet businesses."

Chinadotcom had an explosive initial public offering in the U.S. back in July. Some investors view Chinadotcom, which is backed by America Online Inc. and the state-owned news agency of the People's Republic of China, as the enterprise that could bring the Net to one of the world's largest potential markets.

In trading Friday, shares of Chinadotcom rose $2 to close at $112 on the Nasdaq Stock Market.
