KAPLAN'S CORNER: QUESTION: What effect do you think the Tuesday, March 21, 2000 London gold auction
of 25 tonnes will have on the price of the yellow metal? ANSWER: So far, the mood heading into the auction has
always been the exact opposite of the result. When investors are euphoric, the price collapses. When they are
terrified, it surges. When they are neutral, it does nothing. Since investors right now are scared to death, the
auction is likely to produce a sharp post-auction rally. Gold should rapidly recover $300 spot and continue surging.
