Wild About WAP
There's been an explosion of interest in WAP, or Wireless Application Protocol, which allows you to create web pages that can be viewed on wireless devices like cell phones or within handheld computers like the Palm (that new color version is beckoning to me!). Along with this, a number of WAP search engines have arrived upon the scenes.
Why use a WAP search engine? First, using an ordinary search engine through a wireless device may not be possible or inconvenient. WAP search engines should be designed for low-bandwidth and small screen viewing. More importantly, an ordinary search engine is going to direct you to normal web pages, which again aren't designed for handheld devices. A WAP search engine will direct you to WAP pages, all which are specifically meant for your device. I may take a closer look at WAP search engines in the future,
but in the meantime, you can find a list via the first URL below. And I'll let you know when the Search Engine Report can be viewed in WAP format, probably in about a month or so.

Thank you for the Phone.com tip. They do have a WML developers' tool kit, but it's quite complicated to work with (a bunch of different programs you need to run, not "graphical interface", no support for scrips etc). The same goes for the toolkits from Nokia, Ericsson, and
Dynamic. I'm looking for something more intuitive (like the HTML generators where you just make your page graphically and the code is automatically generated underneath).

Phone.com to License Browser to 10 Japanese Phone Makers
APMI NASDAC listed Phone.com has announced licensing deals with 10 Japanese mobile phone manufacturers. NEC, Casio, Kyocera, Sanyo, Sharp, Sony, Denso, Toshiba, Hitachi and Panasonic have license the UP.Browser, a WAP compatible microbrowser designed to run on wireless phones. Phone.com

Recruit Launches Mobile Internet Service (APMI)
Recruit is building a web site compatible with iMode and WAP phones for accessing the internet. The service is clearly designed with young adults in mind. Users will be able to look for jobs, search for apartments, and
find nearby restaurants through their mobile phones. Access to he service will costsY100 to Y300 per month. Limited resources will be available from September 1, 1999 and additional services will be added in the course of the
year. The service is called Isize Pocket and is an extension of an existing destination site owned and operated by Recruit.

I remember an announcement about NTT making a gateway system so that iMode phones could use WAP applications. Anyone know that status/reality of this?
ANSWER: I met with NTT DoCoMo 2 days ago. Their official word to me was they are hoping to WAP i-mode when they roll out WCDMA -- early 2001 maybe.

DDI Wants Users to Build WAP Compatible Sites
APMI The DDI Group is launching a new service that will allow its mobile phone customers to build their own web sites and exchange e-mail via cellular or PHS phones. The service costs Y300 (US$2.85) per month and is available
only to those with the new phone models that have larger color displays (1.5 times the current displays). Presumably, DDI hopes that by attracting consumers to mobile internet services they will have a ready market that
