Washington D.C., ? Chairman Dan Burton (R-IN) today announced that the Government Reform Committee will hold a hearing on the missing White House E-mails and the mismanagement of subpoenaed records. The hearing will take place on Thursday, March 23, 2000, at 10:00 a.m. in room 2154 of the Rayburn Building.
The Committee will hear testimony from the Northrop Grumman employees who discovered the problem and the White House officials involved.
On June 12, 1998, a group of Northrop Grumman employees who operated the White House e-mail system discovered a major problem. These non-partisan, contract employees discovered a computer glitch that turned up what may be hundreds of thousands of e-mails that came into the White House from 1996 through 1998 but had not been archived as is required by federal law. Also, the relevant e-mails had not been produced to Congress, the Justice Department or any of the several independent counsels ? all of whom were investigating allegations of corruption in the executive branch.
When the contractors informed their White House supervisors of the problem, they were reportedly ordered to remain silent about it or there would be "jail cells with their names on them."
Since the problem was discovered in 1998 the White House has not solved the problem. It has been a few weeks since the story was first reported in the Washington Times. To date, the Committee?s investigation has produced no indication that the Justice Department has looked into the matter.
