Taiwan's Chen rejects China's unity formula

TAIPEI, March 18 (Reuters) - Taiwan president-elect Chen Shui-bian on Saturday rejected Beijing's "one country, two systems" formula for reunification, saying the island would not follow the path of Hong Kong and Macau. "Most Taiwan residents cannot accept 'one country, two systems'," Chen told a news conference, referring to the formula under which Hong Kong reverted to Chinese rule in 1997 followed by Macau last December.

"We do not want to become Hong Kong number two, Macau number two," he said. Taiwan has rejected the formula, which would have promised the island a high degree of autonomy.

It insists reunification is possible only after the mainland embraces Western-style democracy.
