FWIW, there would most certainly be a ST dislocation in terms of chips since the Taiwanese foundries are now one of the largest producers of IC's in the world. Because of this, AMAT would most certainly suffer in the ST very much.

That being said, I do not think it likely that China would get away with this as they have other times in the past(ie Tibet) For one, we are dependent on Taiwanese chips much the same we are dependent on Middle Eastern oil. But I do not believe we could accomplish a defence of Taiwan alone. We would need to be a united force with the rest of the industrialized world and cut off trade with China. They would be securing their own demise should the take this route IMVHO. I believe that there are talks going on right now preparing for this scenario since it obviates the need for nuclear weapons and possiblly infantry troops. Let's hope China does the admirable thing for once and stand on the sidelines......I would not bet on it however.
