Applying LONWORKS Control Network Technology in Utility Automation Projects

Abstract
Today, a number of utilities world-wide are using control network technology for a variety of traditional utility applications including meter reading, demand-side management, distribution automation, substation automation and generation plant automation. Recent developments concerning deregulation, privatisation, and expansion have led utilities to expand their use of control networks into customer sites ranging from homes to commercial buildings to factories. By extending the use of control network technology, utilities are able to provide a comprehensive control networking architecture throughout the utility's own operations as well as on customer premise sites.

This paper provides a discussion of control network technology, (using LONWORKS' control network technology as an example of an implementation), trends impacting the use of control networks, and examples of its use by various utilities world-wide.
