StarBase Selected As eBusiness Management Solution for eTour.com; Web Assets, Code and Content Managed Together Using StarTeam
March 20, 2000 08:32 AM
SANTA ANA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 20, 2000--StarBase Corp. SBAS , a leading provider of eCollaboration solutions for the development and management of eBusiness applications, Monday announced that eTour, Inc., a premier solution for surfing the Internet, has standardized on StarTeam as its Web application development and management solution.

StarTeam Enterprise is used to develop, manage and maintain all digital assets on the eTour.com Web site.

eTour.com, ranked No. 1 on the Web in terms of visitors' staying power, has attracted more than 1.7 million registered customers to date, and is growing at a rate of 15,000 a day. The site currently logs approximately 130,000 visitors per day. This rapid growth has had a significant impact on the eTour development environment.

Increasing numbers of eTour developers, using a complex variety of products to manage and maintain one of the industry's busiest sites, experienced reduced productivity during the development process.

eTour needed a single solution that could accommodate the needs of creative content providers and yet robust enough to meet the more stringent requirements of technical development personnel. eTour's eBusiness applications consist of code, graphical images and text components, and StarTeam delivers an environment capable of managing all these assets.

StarTeam Enterprise was selected to provide a comprehensive solution to this problem.

"The Internet environment moves at a different speed, and the need to respond to that environment requires a development management solution that is easy to use and can be implemented quickly," said Tony Lynn, director of Web development at eTour. "StarTeam gives our team time to implement control and still maintain a fast rate of development.

"The entire team benefits from the tight relationship created between our software developers, quality assurance, and creative workers. With our continued growth, we expect to broaden the use of StarTeam through the StarGate SDK. StarTeam allows us the freedom to handle code deployments to multiple servers quickly."

"Successful management of Web application development requires accommodating team members with varying skill levels, and managing a broad range of digital assets, from legacy code applications to Web content," commented Lydia Patterson, vice president StarBase products group.

"Delivering a single product solution to our customers can increase developer productivity and speed the deployment of Internet solutions."

StarTeam delivers a comprehensive, integrated solution within a collaborative environment to meet the needs of both the technical and non-technical contributors to Web sites. StarTeam increases the efficiency of Web application development by providing a single solution for managing all digital assets. StarTeam's security access provisions provided eTour with the capability to control access to information based on user roles.

With StarTeam, eTour's creative department is able to maintain significant versioning information on images by logging the images into StarTeam, and then transferring them through the Deployment Engineer to a server dedicated to images. The images are served up through a caching service, ensuring that only the most recent graphics are deployed to the Web site.

The eTour development team has successfully shortened development time and extended current resources to help alleviate the ongoing challenges associated with rapid growth.
