Company Press Release SOURCE: Power Integrations Power Integrations Introduces the Highest Level of System Integration with TOPSwitch(R)-FX Power Conversion ICs Programmable Features Offer Expanded Design Flexibility Energy Saving EcoSmart(R) Technology SUNNYVALE, Calif., March 20 /PRNewswire/ -- Power Integrations, Inc. (Nasdaq: POWI - news), today introduces its patented TOPSwitch-FX family, expanding its highly successful offerings of power conversion ICs. TOPSwitch-FX offers engineers unparalleled flexibility to design highly integrated power supplies. In addition, it incorporates the company's energy saving EcoSmart technology to help engineers meet the growing need for environmentally friendly power solutions. The devices deliver up to 75 watts of power for use in diverse markets such as cellular phones, personal computers, set-top boxes, printers, DVDs and LCD monitors.
Integrated Features
``TOPSwitch-FX is the result of years of experience working with well over a thousand power supply engineers who use our very successful power conversion IC products,' stated Balu Balakrishnan, Vice President of Engineering and Strategic Marketing. ``Technical innovations embodied in TOPSwitch-FX enable cost-effective integration of functions that have been on these engineer's wish-list for years.'
Several of the TOPSwitch-FX features are implemented through a single, programmable Multi-function pin. For example, this pin allows simultaneous setting of line under-voltage, line over-voltage and line feed forward using a single resistor. Line under-voltage allows TOPSwitch-FX to perform a glitch-free shut down, while the built-in line over-voltage protects the power supply from line surges. This same resistor also enables line feed forward with duty cycle reduction to reject line ripple. Alternatively, the Multi-function pin can also be used to implement adjustable current limit that enables higher efficiency with smaller and cheaper transformers.
TOPSwitch-FX has a fully integrated soft-start function that reduces startup stresses in the power supply components. Frequency jitter, another fully integrated function, lowers EMI (Electromagnetic Interference). A wider duty cycle range from 0 to 75%, allows use of smaller and lower cost input capacitors. Other integrated features such as hysteretic thermal shutdown, synchronization are also offered. Industry standard packages with omitted pins offer larger creepage on the high voltage pin.
``Engineers are under continuous pressure to design smaller, better and lower cost power supplies and TOPSwitch-FX ICs will help them do this, but with a new level of design flexibility,' Mr. Balakrishnan added. ``In addition, our EcoSmart energy saving features allow these engineers to cost-effectively meet pressing demands for more environmentally friendly or greener electronic products.'
EcoSmart Technology Enables Green Designs
The TOPSwitch-FX family includes several features that significantly reduce energy consumption, especially in standby and no-load conditions. These include remote ON/OFF, cycle-skipping and half-frequency option. A unique remote ON/OFF function can shut off the power to the product when it is not in use. As an example, when a printer is not in use, the microcontroller in the printer can turn off the power supply by signaling the TOPSwitch-FX. This effectively ``unplugs' the printer. When a new print job is sent to the printer, TOPSwitch-FX automatically turns on the power to the printer. These features could enable many electronic systems to go well beyond current energy efficiency guidelines such as Energy Star in US.
Design Support Tools
The TOPSwitch-FX is supported by a comprehensive suite of design tools available from the company's web site, powerint.com . A Design Accelerator Kit (DAK-8), consisting of a 30 W power supply prototype board, samples and full documentation, may be requested through the web site.
Availability
The TOPSwitch-FX family is in production and currently consists of three members, TOP232, TOP233 and TOP234. Devices are available in three different packages, a five pin TO-220, a plastic DIP and a surface mount package. Unit pricing in quantities of 10,000 range from $1.06 to $1.54 for the smallest to the largest member in the family.
