Good morning and welcome to Brunch. Today we?re serving a sampler plate of topics. Pull up a chair and help yourself.
TAKING IT IN THE SHORTS?
As the century came to a close, I wrote a column that picked on five companies that I felt would have a tough time in 2000. I called them my "Top 5 Shorts for 2000." I thought it was time to check back in on them.
So far, only one of them is clearly beating the market and in positive territory for the year -- Best Buy (BBY). It?s up about 30% for the year and trading at a P/E of 50.
In second place, MarketWatch.com Inc. (MKTW) is just above water for the year and neck-and-neck with the S&P 500. In third place, 4 Kids Entertainment (KIDE) is flat for the year and just below the S&P. Fourth place goes to Qualcomm (QCOM), a stock that?s had the wind knocked out of it and is down about 23% this year.
Bringing up the rear, and sucking serious wind, is VA Linux Systems (LNUX), the most over-hyped IPO of all time, which is down 52% this year.
Funny as it sounds, the "Best Shorts from Here" are the ones that have done the worse: Qualcomm and VA Linux."
I hate this guy!....
