Denso to double U.S. digital cell phone output

TOKYO, March 21 (Reuters) - Denso Corp <6902.T> said on Tuesday it plans to double its production of digital cellular phones in the United States to 160,000 units per month around August.

Denso, a leading Japanese car parts maker and owned 24.6 percent by Toyota Motor Corp <7203.T>, plans to invest two billion yen to boost its digital cell phone production in the United States and plans to increase the work force at a California plant to 400 from 170, a Denso spokesman said.

Wholly owned Denso subsidiary Denso Wireless Systems America has been producing cellular phones since October 1998 and supplies 1.9 gigahertz CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access) phones to affiliates of U.S. long-distance carrier Sprint Corp <FON.N>.

Denso aims to increase its share in the U.S. digital cell phone market to more than 10 percent from the current seven percent and its U.S. cell phone business is expected to turn a profit in the 2000/01 business year, the spokesman said.

Demand for Denso-made cell phones is rising in the United States because they are compatible with both analog and digital circuits and are able to access the Internet, he said.

At 0141 GMT, Denso's shares were up five yen or 0.23 percent at 2,225 yen.
