Indeed good news! This is unbelievable how much NT is spending in the optics space. They are clearly convinced that Optics is the holy grail of networking and are taking a huge pole position to be the first mover!

The more I think about the recent purchases (Qtera, Xros, Coretek), the more I realize this is all about recruiting incredible Optics Talent at the highest level. I mean, without the founding geniuses that are pushing the Optics Science, none of these companies are worth anything since they have no customer base or revenue stream to speak of.

It's like the New York Yankees Steinbrenner buying the BEST free agent in the market and in the rarefied field of optics science, you simply have to acquire and LOCK IN the leading scientists who are going to convert theoretical optics science into Applied COMMERCIAL PRODUCT for Nortel.

And the other interesting thing about what is happening is that these leading optics companies are CHOOSING Nortel (yes, even when you are paying billions, the market is so hot and these propeller heads are in such a demand that THEY choose which company acquires them -- again like the Free Agent market in the professional sports).

What this tells me is that these leading Optics startups have looked at LU, CSCO, NT and have CHOSEN NT as the market leader in the optics space. Since their main goal is to get their products (as their financial goal is not even in doubt) into the market place, they have bet on NT as the best company to get their technology installed before their competing start-ups!

Good testomonial to NT's lead in the Optics space in my opinion.

NT is betting the "farm" on optics as Roth knows the light is the future of networking and he who controls the backbone will have big advantages right through the rest of the network -- down to the enterprise LAN/WAN/INTRANET.
