Nice move yesterday, more to come IMO:
Agate Announces Next Generation HotChip For Linux; Affordable IDE Chip Will Enable "Hot Swapping" of Components For Linux-Based Workstations And Internet Server Appliances
FREMONT, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March l7, 2000--Agate Technologies, Inc. (OTC BB: AGTE) today announced it will soon be releasing its next generation new HotChip(TM), a "hot swap" IDE Plug & Play ASIC (Application Specific Integrated Circuit) chip with software driver, to support the Linux operating system on Intel-based workstations and Internet Server Appliances. Agate is recognized as the industry leader in supplying IDE hot swap capability to the notebook OEM market, as well as generic IDE device level Plug & Play solutions to support Windows 95/98 and NT 4.0 on PC desktops.
Hot swap is an industry term implying that a component of a computer, such as a hard drive, can be attached or detached physically and electrically without impeding the performance and state of the computer. Agate's HotChip(TM) is based on its new intelliSWAP(TM) architecture that offers user-friendly auto-activation of target applications for gaining immediate access to user data upon simple device insertion. This solution not only reduces computer downtime, but also simplifies repair and upgrade requirements on Linux-based workstations and internet appliances. It also allows the sharing and migration of large Windows-based data repositories to Linux-based systems.
With the growing acceptance of Linux in the PC industry, and recent versions robust enough to contend for enterprise OS space, Agate feels the time is right to port the intelliSWAP(TM) agent technology to Linux to provide the Plug & Play scalability necessary for true enterprise level system support and availability. "Linux is all about open systems, stability, and value," said Francis Khoo, Chief Executive Officer at Agate. "In our view, the flexibility and power of the intelliSWAP(TM) engine was developed with this same value proposition in mind. With advances in processor performance and IDE hard drive capabilities, the PC is optimal for taking on enterprise level tasks. Linux and Agate make enterprise level scalability affordable for everyone."
Agate is expected to release HotChip(TM) for Linux by April 2000. The version is targeting primary compatibility with Red Hat Linux 6.1 and is expected to provide cross industry support for all Linux OS vendors.
