Geezus Richard.... and I bet China is prepared to see their entire nation turned into a glass bottomed parking lot (radioactive glass that is).

Japan made the same mistake believing that we wouldn't come to the aid of French Indo-China, as well as the Chinese mainland. Yeah, it took a sneak attack on Pearl Harbor to bring us into a full-scale war with them, but we certainly saw the hand-writing on the way.

That being, "If we don't counter aggression against our allies, we will ultimately be the target of agression ourselves".

Listen... they may rightly believe that the US people would rather NOT go to war. But they wrongly underestimate their ability to intimidate us. Especially since many American believe a confrontation with China is inevitable.

And we know that nuclear weapons have prevented the US and Russia from engaging in all-out war for 50 years. Threatening to nuke us is a hollow argument in light of the massive retaliation that would occur against Bejing.

Is Taiwan important enough to them to risk such an escalation?

I doubt it... especially given the widely hailed pragmatism and long-term perspective that are a major part of the world's perception of the Chinese.

And even so... after Taiwan... what demand with Bejing place upon the rest of the world to satisfy their claim over chinese people.. Indochina? The Spratly Islands? Japan itself?

I think we have learned our lesson from Munich.

And if we haven't... well... that's why I believe in god. I have something better to look forward to.

Regards,

Ron
