YouthStream Selects BEA Tuxedo to Connect its Online Network of More Than Three Million Members
BEA Tuxedo Ensures Rapid Response Time and Scalability as Membership Grows
SAN JOSE, Calif., March 21 /PRNewswire/ -- BEA Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq: BEAS), the E-Commerce Transactions Company(TM), announced today that YouthStream Media Networks (Nasdaq: NETS), the only omnimedia company to serve the young adult market, now uses BEA Tuxedo(R) for its rapidly growing suite of interactive services at sixdegrees(R), YouthStream's online community serving more than three million members. Through the sixdegrees community members have free access to interest groups, bulletin boards, chat rooms and search tools to communicate with friends, meet new people, and take part in events and activities focused on shared interests.

In 1999, sixdegrees based its degreemail instant messaging service on BEA Tuxedo, the industry-leading e-commerce transaction server. Now sixdegrees has expanded its reliance on BEA Tuxedo, and is using the battle-tested transaction server as the foundation for its entire suite of member services. The proven reliability and scalability of BEA Tuxedo helps ensure that members can access all sixdegrees services quickly, regardless of the number of users or time of day.

"The sixdegrees community epitomizes the e-generation, the millions of people who turn to the Internet for entertainment, news, social interaction, work-related information, and nearly every other facet of their lives," said Joe Menard, president, BEA E-Commerce Server Division. "BEA Tuxedo provides the reliability and scalability sixdegrees needs to meet the rapidly increasing demand for Web services that are fast, easy, personalized, 100 percent accurate, and constantly adapting."

According to Harlan Peltz, CEO of YouthStream Media Networks, "The transition of sixdegrees on to BEA's tried and true platform directly impacts our business by providing us with the expandability we need to extend our services. We are now positioned to take full advantage of our proprietary connection engine technology to reach out and acquire new users."

sixdegrees is a leading global online community where more than 3 million members in over 165 countries come to meet new people through their friends. Inspired by the theory that every person in the world is connected to every other person through at least one path of six relationships, sixdegrees is able to connect nearly every one of its members to each other through the people they know in real life. Members use unique, proprietary sixdegrees tools, including personalized bulletin boards, special interest groups, live chat rooms, people search tools and a services marketplace, to meet, interact and transact with each other. Real-life connections add context, confidence and a sense of community, whether the member is hunting for an apartment in Manhattan, planning a business trip to Singapore, or contacting others who share a passion for politics.

Cliff Rosen, vice president, Advanced Application Development of YouthStream emphasizes that the proven BEA Tuxedo platform provides a solid transaction infrastructure that helps YouthStream deliver performance and dependability to its users. "As more members join sixdegrees and interact with increasing frequency, BEA Tuxedo will play a critical role in managing the increased data traffic and transactions that result, helping ensure that the sixdegrees community remains connected at all times," said Rosen. "BEA's high levels of reliability enable us to focus our efforts on developing new functionality and services to bring to our members in the future."

BEA Tuxedo is part of BEA's E-Commerce Transaction Platform(TM). With approximately 60 percent of the off-mainframe market, BEA Tuxedo is the most widely deployed transaction application server for building high-performance, high-volume e-commerce applications. Compliant with all leading industry standards, BEA Tuxedo provides complete integration with market-leading application development tools, systems management solutions, and legacy application environments. This flexibility speeds and simplifies the development process, and is a significant advantage for sixdegrees.
