SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA, 2000 MAR 21 (NB) -- By David Frith, Computer Daily News. France's Alcatel [NYSE:ALA] and Australia's number two telecommunications carrier Cable & Wireless Optus [AUS:CWO] say they are working on a joint venture to use satellite technology to deliver untimed local calls, high-speed Internet access and video conferencing to 40,000-plus Australians living in the nation's most remote areas.
The plan is one of several the companies have agreed to develop under a memorandum of understanding signed on Monday.
French-owned Alcatel will provide two-way broadband satellite systems, supporting IP applications to enable Optus to supply voice, high speed Internet, video conferencing and IP multi-casting, the companies said.
Alcatel will supply and install the satellite terminals, network management and intelligent network services, while Optus will deliver the services to remote regions spread across Australia, using its B1 satellite, already in place.
