Not only do they put it in the same hole, but when it comes to aerial runs, they actually put it in the same wire. The power grid that was discussed here yesterday is already fiberized to a great extent, much of it dormant, some of it leased to interstates and local operators, and a good deal of it (by mileage, not capacity) is being used for inter-company power generation monitoring, electric utility diagnostics (phase angle, power quality, remote generation station and substation environmentals, etc.) and load distribution and shedding purposes.

To a great extent these fiber-optic- derived channels have already replaced microwave and telco telemetry lines which historically were used for the same purposes.
