When bigoted Irish refer to themselves they are usually full of prunes. The Irish are the result of waves of immigration. I don't think man had an independent birth on the emerald isle. Scots, Britons, Saxons, Norse, Danes, Bretons, Spanish, Cymrians, and many others have poured into Ireland and mixed with those who came earlier. It will be delightful to discover which Irish have a "Protestant" gene. The Irish are amazingly capable of rising above religious differences which every Englishman from Henry VIII have attempted to accentuate. "Irish" certainly has little traditional connection with Roman Catholicism. The Irish church started RC, became naturalized, then the "Celtic Rite" was overthrown again. Many of the strongest Irish revolutionaries were Protestant and proud of it.
