I thought the low-end chip, Spitfire, would preceed the high end chip. After all, it doesn't have as much L2, doesn't have to do SMP, etc.

Therefore it's a lower-value offering, essentially a cost-reduction of T-bird. But T-bird is the stalking horse which will still fit into the existing slot infrastructure and also break the ice with respect to the new socket infrastructure.
