Birim Expands Drilling at Opon Gold Prospect
MONTREAL, CANADA--Encouraged by the results obtained from a drilling campaign in February (news release March 7, 2000), Birim Goldfields Inc. is proceeding to expand exploration on its Opon gold prospect in Ghana.
A 36-hole (2,155 metres) reverse circulation drilling program commenced today and follows the 17 holes (1,075 metres) completed last month. This will test the main mineralized zone to the north and south of that drilled in February and, as well, will drill a parallel structure that seems to be taking shape to the east. The same drill contractor, Geodrill Limited of Perth, Western Australia, is being employed and the program will continue to be under the immediate direction of Victor King, Birim's Chief Operating Officer, based in Accra.
The February drilling defined a broad structure dipping shallowly at between 25 degrees and 40 degrees to the northwest. Mineralised intersections also contained a higher grade payshoot plunging gently to the north within the plane of the main zone. Sixteen of the seventeen holes drilled intersected gold mineralization, all in oxide material (saprolite) close to surface. Current drilling will follow the same pattern as the previous campaign and will be done along lines 50 metres apart with collars at 25-metre intervals along each line. Holes are inclined to the east at -60 degrees with lengths varying between 40 and 100 metres.
Judging by the efficient drilling and excellent ground conditions encountered in the previous campaign, Birim management expects this program to be completed by mid-April and looks forward to releasing results once all assays have been received.
It is useful to remind shareholders that the Opon gold deposit is located at the southern end of the Dunkwa concession and lies within two kilometres of Bogoso Mines' northernmost open cast, currently in production.
Birim Goldfields Inc. is a mining exploration firm whose mission is to explore and develop gold deposits in Ghana, West Africa. The Company currently has 23.8 million common shares outstanding.
