You know, you would think LU was ready for bankruptcy based on the whining on this thread. Over the past four quarters, including the unfortunate Dec. quarter, LU has averaged 19% annual growth. Over the same time, if you add back Bay to NT's 98 sales to get apples to apples, NT grew only 14%.

So, LU is number 2 in optical - and selling everything it can make. Despite the perception that it lost market share in 99, it grew faster than the 38% optical equipment industry growth and took share from number 3 Alcatel and number 5 Ciena. It has pledged better than 50% optical equipment growth for 2000 and should exceed that number by a wide margin.

LU is number 2 in wireless infrastructure. Number one in ATM. Number one in data access. Number one in communications software. It is the same size as JDSU in optical components and growing just as fast. Its semiconductor business was the fastest growing of the world's twenty largest vendors in 99. Its professional services business is growing 40% a year. Its optical fiber business is neck and neck with corning and is growing 30%. Once the enterprise business is spun out, these businesses will account for 70% of revenues. Does one rough quarter with a difficult product transition cancel out all of this excellence? Have some patience, NT was in worse straits than this 15 months ago. It has since quadrupled.
