Dubai Bars 'Business' Beggars

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates - The United Arab Emirates is cracking down on foreigners who come here on business visas and then collect up to $1,500 a day by begging, the leading immigration official here said Tuesday.
'A major problem is that people in general sympathize with beggars,' Brigadier Hadher Maheeri, director general of immigration and naturalization, told the Khaeej Times.
'If there were genuine cases of people in need, charity organizations would take care of them,' he said. 'Some people managed to collect as much as 80,000 dihrams ($21,800) over 14 days.'
More than 1,200 beggars were arrested in the Gulf federation last year - a third of them in the trading and tourist hub of Dubai alone - compared with 486 in 1998. Begging is forbidden in the United Arab Emirates
As part of the crackdown, the authorities are looking at letting the emirates' embassies handle visa requests rather than the present system of sponsorship by companies or individuals.
'More than 80 percent of those found begging had come to the UAE on businessmen's visas sponsored by tour operators and airlines,' the brigadier said.
