people that wanted to post would have to pay to do so, but you could still lurk. That would have to grandfather in all current thread poster, have grace period, where all current SI'ers could join, after that time expired they would have to pay. Each thread would have to vote on it. But wait the more I think about I see it as a being a large mess, the out cry would large and swamp the web masters.. Personally if I would never do it, I like to take on all comers no matter what. hmm the password or key would have to be tied to your account with si, so si would have to control the door, not the threads. What a giant addition to the software it would be..
