With the Global Implementation Complete, Compaq, the Largest Global
Supplier of Computing Systems, is Using Aspect to Integrate
Worldwide Business Practices
MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., March 22 /PRNewswire/ -- Aspect Development, Inc., (Nasdaq: ASDV), the global leader in collaborative solutions for business-to-business eCommerce and inbound supply management, today announced that Compaq Computer Corporation (NYSE: CPQ) has completed global implementation of Aspect's collaborative commerce solution for Design. Compaq originally purchased the Aspect solution in 1998 in a multi-million dollar contract that included decision support software, reference eContent, and Aspect Consulting and Data Services. Aspect's collaborative commerce solution is the basis for Compaq's first global inbound supply management program that is expected to reduce the company's $24 billion annual commodity spend.
eCommerce Initiative Leverages Spend Across All Global Divisions
The program is integrating Compaq's procurement and engineering design practices throughout the corporation. An estimated 5,000 Compaq end users will utilize Aspect via Web and PC-based clients to reduce annual spend and increase product quality. Aspect is integrating its solution to the Compaq Supplier Exchange(TM) to allow Compaq vendors to leverage Aspect functionality.
"Aspect initiatives at other leading manufacturers have reduced production material expenditures by as much as 10-15%," said Bob Evans, Aspect president and COO. "This means enormous savings for companies like Compaq."
Rapid Implementation and ROI
Phase one of the Compaq deployment, the implementation of Aspect's design solution integrated with SAP R/3 at Compaq's Singapore manufacturing site, was completed in less than 90 days. Phase two, which included Compaq sites in Houston, Dallas, Austin, as well as Tandem (California) went live in August, 1998, less than six months from the initial project launch.
"Aspect's eCommerce solution plays an important role in our overall Supplier eBusiness portfolio," said Cynthia Whitworth, manager of Compaq's Inter-enterprise Supplier eBusiness. "The Aspect solution allows us to collaborate more effectively with our suppliers by connecting our internal and external design communities to part and supplier information needed to support strategic decision-making. Web enabled access to part and supplier information increases the utilization of standard components, drives more commonality across product designs, and helps identify opportunities for greater cost leverage."
Program to Shorten Time-to-Market and Reduce Commodity Spend
Aspect provides the basis for Compaq's first global Approved Vendor List (AVL) which has been implemented in all lines of Compaq's business. This global, consolidated view of part and supplier information enables Compaq to facilitate the reuse of materials across multiple platforms to create commonality in Design across the entire organization, which leads to shortened time-to-market, obsolescence reduction, and total cost reduction. Compaq's strategic product development system from Aspect includes Compaq internal part numbers cross-referenced with supplier and distributor part numbers from Aspect's eContent database containing over 7 million standard electronic components. Aspect's Data Services group provided migration, standardization and enrichment for several hundred thousand records of Compaq's component and supplier legacy data into an integrated database with Aspect's eContent. The Process Consulting team from Aspect implemented Compaq-specific work-flows to automate change notices, approvals, and database updates.
"We are thrilled with the success Compaq is experiencing with our enterprise solution for inbound supply management," Bob Evans added. "We're enabling the world's leading global computer company to establish a corporate preferred parts program that can be implemented at each new site as Compaq continues to grow." |
