RESEARCH ALERT - ABN AMRO starts Credence at buy
CHICAGO, March 21 (Reuters) - ABN AMRO said Tuesday it initiated coverage of chip equipment maker Credence Systems Corp. (NasdaqNM:CMOS - news) with a buy rating and a 12-month price target of $160.

Shares in Credence closed up 9-7/8 at 121-3/8 Tuesday.

``The outsourcing business model, flawless management execution since late 1998, and new product portfolio have propelled CMOS into the No. 2 market share leader in ATE (automated test) for mixed-signal ICs, the fastest growing segment of the semiconductor industry,' ABN AMRO analysts wrote in a research note.

Credence is also approaching its goal of being the No. 2 vendor in non-DRAM ATE, the analysts said.
