It looks like Nokia's DSL initiative might work... solid deals from Asia and Europe during the last two months. If only North America would follow; Nokia needs to expand its US infra sales.

Motorola's giant TETRA deal in England was a disappointment... Nokia had built a big deal in European TETRA deals. Nokia probably needs to start landing Asian TETRA orders to keep the leadership position here.

Anyway, with current trends, Nokia may end this year as a number one/two DSL company and number one TETRA provider. With the bulk of the sales from these nascent standards ahead of us, it's the kind of position Nokia needs to be in to complement the consumer product division.

LAN sales should pick up later this year and EDGE should start selling towards autumn. This is the next wave of new technology initiatives - Nokia probably needs that number two position on these markets to keep the share price mo going.

I'm assuming that Nokia is narrowly ahead of Ericsson in GPRS deals and narrowly behind in W-CDMA. The key here is to block out Lucent, Nortel, Alcatel, Siemens and Motorola - Ericsson is probably going to finish ahead in the end. If Nokia can slash Ericsson's final market share advantage in GPRS and W-CDMA to below 10 points, it's going to be a major improvement over second-generation wireless infra market share situation.
