Sector, as our resident technical expert, could you explain
what is meant by "switch fabric" as used in the Terabit Turmoil article referenced earlier?

MARCH 21
Cheeky Marketing Strategy

To defuse these criticisms, in December Cisco also announced its 12000 Terabit System, which consists of up to sixteen GSR 12016 chassis connected into one 'virtual router' via a separate, bolt-on, five terabit switch fabric.

According to Cisco, this is how it all fits together: Up to sixteen GSR 12016 chassis and line cards are installed next to each other in a CO or POP. The
existing switch fabric is taken out and replaced with a route scalability module which connects the switch to a separate rack mounted switch fabric....<snip>

The announcement is classic Cisco, allowing the vendor to prolong the useful lifetime of an existing product (the 12016), minimize disruption to customers, while also claiming to increase performance.

But there's a problem: Cisco doesn't today have a switch fabric that can come close to reaching even one terabit of capacity -- let alone five. And without the switch fabric, it doesn't have a terabit router.

The stock is falling back now. Approaching 130. Will be interesting to see where we close today. By the way, I wore my T-shirt all weekend hoping to get some good luck from it. I guess the effect is kicking in today.
