People built suburbs because people preferred them to the crowded ugly central cities. The idea the they were kidnapped by automobiles and driven out into the country against their will is silly.

In part, the very way towns and cities are structured is driven by the tyranny of the car culture.

The solution to congestion is obvious, build communities with less density not more. This sensible solution has been demonized by the elite planning types by calling it sprawl.
