But the auto/truck companies did their best to buy up and effectively dismantle the wonderfully efficient railroads we had in this country. Railroad are the method par excellence for moving heavy freight large distances (with local truck networks from the railheads instead of the cross country trucking we do now which is nowhere near as efficient; the rise in gas prices recently and the squeeze on truckers is only putting this in high relief.) The auto makers really did scheme, for example around L.A., to do away with trains and planned subways and foster dependence on highways. There is more than one way to arrive at an efficient economy loving transport network.

The lack of efficient subway networks in our great cities is barbaric.
