I think you grew up in another world. The interoperable nature of all IEEE802.3 technologies accounts for its
wide-spread use. Gigether, ie. 1000Mbps is a standard and
that is IEEE802.3z. 10 Gigether is not--yet. Any company
that ships ANY proprietary ether solution is doomed to failure and that includes 10 GigEther.
