I am all excited about TerrorBeam, which is scaring the day-lights out of other last-mile providers, but I am also wondering about companies you can actually get your hands on.
Wi-Lan may be to mobile broadband wireless what TerrorBeam is to fixed broadband wireless. But to my knowledge, Mr. Gilder has not mentioned it at all. I hope he or some Gilder-ite will look at this stock.
Wi-Lan seems to be QCOM like in that it owns rights to superior bandwidth wireless technology -- W-OFDM, a technology which allows more than 50 mbps and out-of-sight wireless. It seems to be the only current here-and-now technology which allows mobile broadband access at such speeds. It is also a fixed wireless provider, but seems to have no competition in mobile wireless. HDR is only a 3mps solution, as I understand. For video, audio, etc, W-OFDM is the only game around for those on the move, in trains, cars, buses, walking around, etc.
They already have partnerships with Phillips and Telia. Their tech has been proven by a test by CalTrans. And Thursday, they hooked up with onsat, a satellite service which gives Wi-Lan access to most of North America and Europe.
Any thoughts would be appreciated.
