Huh? I get 23 city, 30 hwy (1998 C230). One of the worst gas mileage vehicles in the country? Please explain? I drive a compact, you drive a subcompact. Good for you, that's great, but you're going to call me a hypocrite for driving a 2.3 liter, 4-cylinder compact??? As a family car, with wife and kids as passengers? Heh? As I've made clear, the case against the SUV stands on three legs--gas mileage is only one of them (and as a fact by itself, the least significant). The other two are pollution and safety:
The SUV pollution case:
<<Taking advantage of two legal loopholes dating back to when SUVs and other light trucks were used primarily for farming and hauling, automakers are building SUVs and other light trucks that emit as much as three times more smog-forming air pollution and use 33% more gas per mile driven than the average car.>>

<<A proposal recently floated by auto manufacturers would cut average fleet nitrogen oxide emissions to 0.07 grams per mile for all vehicles, including SUVs and light trucks, by 2011. The average is 0.4 grams per mile currently for cars and 0.7 grams to 1.1 grams per mile for SUVs. >>

On the SUV safety menace (which has 3 basic components: weight, height, and center of gravity or rollover potential), this site says it all:
