The bigger issue is why were the AlGore's so closely connected to one of the world's great polluters? That close connection belies AlGore's front as an environmentalist. According to some reports, Hammer "owned" AlGore Sr. from the time he was a Congressman. That Hammer made the AlGore's wealthy through Hillary-type financial transactions and then gave Sr. a top job when he was thrown out of office in 1970. Why didn't the AlGore's put the public before their interests and demand that OXY clean up the mess when it was discovered? Surely they knew about the pollution before the public. Perhaps that's what AlGore means when he claims that he discovered Love Canal - that his family had inside knowledge. Why didn't the AlGore's demand that OXY pay up in 1988 when they were found liable for cleanup costs? Why did it take seven years, six after a consent agreement was reached between the U.S. government and Occidental? The close connection belies AlGore's front as an environmentalist - just like his new front as a "reformer" confounds a similar reality.
