Qualcomm expands licensing agreement with Hitachi
SAN DIEGO, March 23 /PRNewswire/ - Wireless technology developer Qualcomm Inc. (NasdaqNM:QCOM - news) on Thursday said it has entered into an mulitmillion-dollar agreement to extend an existing licensing agreement with Hitachi .

Qualcomm, developer of Code Division Multiple Access (CMDA) technology that is key to cell phones and other wireless technologies, said the deal grants Hitachi a license to develop, manufacture and sell infrastructure and subscriber equipment for all modes of the third-generation CDMA standard.

Prior to the expanded agreement Hitachi's CDMA license covered only Qualcomm's cmdaOne applications.

Under the terms of the amended agreement, Hitachi will pay Qualcomm a multi-million dollar up-front license fee and ongoing royalties as Hitachi begins selling third-generation CDMA equipment. The royalties payable by Hitachi are the same irrespective of the licensed CDMA standard.

Qualcomm holds a range of patents which are essential to all of the CDMA wireless telecommunications standards, widely used in the United States.
