Bob,

It doesn't do much good to question some people.

If I may paraphrase, "Some are born fools, some achieve foolishness and some have foolishness thrust upon them."

Now, regarding the press release, the most significant element to me is the fact that it directly quotes a senior spokesman for Sony. When a corporation allows itself to be quoted you can be sure that every word and phrase in the press release has been carefully examined by that company.

In that light, note the key section:

(Fred Falk quote) "...e.Digital's designs for portable Internet music players will now be able to play ATRAC3-encodd files in real time without transcoding ."

He continued, "We will work together with Sony and other partners to build players with the maximum sound quality and compression, and to promote secure, SDMI-capable designs that support music content from the major record labels."

I do not believe that it is a huge stretch to infer from this that e.Digital has a very real prospect of building or designing players for Sony that do not require the cumbersome transcoding process.

I suspect that such e.Digital players are being evaluated by Sony currently and that marketing decisions on potential product launch dates will be made shortly.
