I showed my e-book to a friend who is getting ready to go on an extensive tour of Europe. His comment? "Boy, if I could download all my travel guides into this thing, then edit the parts I want to emphasize, and it had GPS in it which i could integrate with the maps in it, it would be the perfect, perfect travel device". He's right. I think what you're describing has already been developed, it's called 'The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy' ;-)
