There's nothing magic about what is being planned here, in fact it is pretty simple. It is a free space laser, so rather than sending the laser light over a fiber optic cable, it is sent out over the air. The simplicity, however, has an entire set of problems, from atmospheric attentuation, to physical blockage, data loss through bit errors, line of sight obstruction and rights of way, multiplexing methods, etc. But the concept itself is pretty simple, and the lenses to be used for gathering the IR light I assume to be of the same type as are used in night vision equipment. However, they will have to be machined very precisely, having near perfect optics to avoid scattering, reflection, abberation, and all kinds of bad things. I assume that is why they are going to Meade. BTW, nice move in the stock today! |
