niceguy, this lame story on Upside Today isn't helping AMD any:

Time machine: Brace yourself for a chipmaker smackdown. Intel (INTC) is set to add two new, speedy, Pentium III-like Celeron chips to its low-end next week, and rival AMD (AMD) is brewing a cheap version of the Athlon called Spitfire, which observers anticipate will be released this summer.

The last time the two companies went head to head with cheapo chip technology, in late 1998 early 1999, Intel launched a "scorched earth" price war that sent AMD into three straight unproftable quarters.

Duh. Early 99 AMD was behind in MHz and had one product. A 98 pound weakling with one arm competing with a 300 # gorilla. Today AMD's right arm (athlon) can out-spar anything Intel can throw at it. Its left arm, K6-2, is weak, but is about to be replaced with K6-2+ which I believe has been sandbagged.
