DuPont Says Healtheon/WebMD Investment Worth More Than $500 Mln

New York, March 23 (Bloomberg) -- Dupont Co. Chairman and Chief Executive Charles Holliday said the chemical company's year- old investment in Healtheon/WebMD Corp has ``escalated significantly' and is worth more than $500 million.

DuPont in April formed a five-year, $220 alliance with WebMD Inc., an Internet company linking doctors, patients and insurers that later merged with Healtheon Corp. The agreement called for DuPont to provide information and advertising for its nutritional products and invest much less than $220 million, Holliday said in an interview.

Since that investment, Wilmington, Delaware-based DuPont has formed several Internet alliances aimed at expanding online sales of products ranging from apparel to chemicals. Last month the company announced a $100 million joint venture with Internet Capital Group Inc., which Holliday expects to contribute the bulk of the $1 billion in Internet-related revenue the company is forecasting for the next year.

``We didn't do the WebMD investment with the equity increase in mind, but it did encourage us,' Holliday said.

Healtheon shares rose 1 1/8 to 33 1/16 and are little changed in the last 12 months. DuPont shares rose 2 7/8 to 55 and are down almost 3 percent in the last 12 months.
